PROJECT CATEGORY - VISUAL ARTS
Medieval weapons as a national legacy are a symbol of the times of the honorary chivalric code and fantasmatic traditional values. Arms fairs, which often glorify violence, elitism and patriarchal patterns, become an arena of performative deconstruction and transformation in the exhibition space. Traditional defensive tools and medieval icons are transformed into symbols of regaining subjectivity, emancipation and the fight for equality.
This is an attempt to borrow and transform the aesthetics and function of melee weapons fairs, as well as to question their archetypal form. The artists participating in the exhibition wonder whether courage and masculinity have to go hand in hand. They ask questions about existing cultural clichés, social expectations and issues of identity formation. Instead of reinforcing stereotypical gender roles, the exhibition convention opens up a field for experimentation and challenging established patterns, inviting the creation of new, more inclusive narratives. The temple of normative masculinity is queered and transformed, and its violent potential is reformulated. Armors and swords are transformed into attributes of resistance against oppressive norms and tools used to build communities based on transcending old systems. The exhibition not only critically examines these topics, but also proposes an affirmative and inclusive vision of the future.
