Artistic workshops for adults on creating folk spiders
Ahead of us is the second edition of the series "Creative Inspirations" - artistic workshops for adults! This time we look under the roofs of rural cottages, where tradition was combined with magic, and each element had its unique function. Together with Ulka Panasiuk, we will discover how to create colorful, spatial decorations that were not only supposed to decorate modest rooms, but also to protect the home and bring luck.
In rural houses, spiders, made of easily accessible materials such as straw, colored tissue paper or paper, hung under the ceiling, gently moved by the breeze. They served a decorative function, hung in the middle of the ceiling or in the so-called sacred corner. Traditionally, they were hung every Christmas, and their presence symbolized fertility and happiness in the coming year. Spiders could take on various forms: radiant, crystalline, spherical or chandelier.
During the four-hour workshop, participants will learn the history of ornaments and how to make basic elements that will allow them to independently construct a folk spider, which they will be able to take home with them.
Meet the host:
Ulka Panasiuk comes from Małoziemice (Wola Uhruska commune), and currently lives and works in Włodawa. In her free time, she creates folk spiders, learning mainly on her own - from the Internet, books and her own experiments. She uses traditional materials such as straw and tissue paper, and her favorite forms are the chandelier and crystal spider. Since 2020, she has created almost 40 spiders. We will find a bit of a modern accent in her works. She runs handicraft workshops for children and adults, promoting spider traditions. For her, creating spiders is a way to express herself, relax and clear her mind.
