PROJECT CATEGORY – PERFORMING ARTS
We invite you to a dance performance by Paweł Sakowicz, evoking the figure of the American dancer, choreographer, actor and teacher Fred Herko.
... it is not entirely clear whether Fred Herko planned to end his intimate performance with a suicide. He took a bath, turned on Mozart's Coronation Mass and began dancing naked in a friend's living room. He approached the open window several times. When the Sanctus sounded, he took a running start and jumped out of the window of an apartment located on the fifth floor on New York's Cornelia Street. After all, every ballet dancer feels like he can fly, and suspended for a second in a jump, he actually flies.
The work began at the Zachęta exhibition Lepsza ja. The introduction to its creation were workshops led by the artist with the gallery's audience and research on the figure of the jump in the history of dance. The result is an exceptionally physical and exhausting act, a 40-minute intensive transformation of the jump, which sometimes reaches back to rave techniques and other times to spectacular ballet jumps. As the author put it: “The jump is treated as a pagan ritual, football dribble, baroque excess or symbolic ascension”.
Paweł Sakowicz – choreographer and dancer. He creates choreographic performances, collaborates with theatre and film directors. He is particularly interested in the history of dance and issues of cultural appropriation in choreography. He has shown his works, among others, during three editions of the Polish Dance Platform, at the Divine Comedy Festival, Santarcangelo Festival, Zürcher Theater Spektakel, Sirenos Festival, La Biennale de danse du Val-de-Marne, at the Susch Museum, Kunsthaus Hamburg, Tramway Glasgow, NYU Skirball in New York and CAC in New Orleans.
