"Time of Art: Understanding Modern and Contemporary Art" is a series of sessions that combine theoretical knowledge with practical exercises and shared reflection. Each session consists of an accessible introduction to a selected phenomenon in 20th- and 21st-century art, followed by a workshop section—including discussions, analyses, and individual and group tasks—that allow participants to better understand the language of contemporary art and experience it in action.

The development of action art was a consequence of the revaluations in art in the second half of the 20th century: a critical approach to the market and a questioning of the idea of the work as an object. Actionists decided to blur the lines between art and everyday human activity, and their activities extended beyond the walls of galleries and museums. During this session, we will trace the birth of actionism and its emergence in Polish art, and together define the difference between happenings and performance art. We will examine the concept of body art and its radical realizations. We will also discuss the conventionalization of action art in the 1990s and the contemporary explorations of a new generation of artists in Poland, who use performance to speak about their own identity.

Karolina Plinta – art historian, critic, and editor-in-chief of "Szum" magazine, one of the most articulate commentators on the contemporary art scene in Poland.
