"Time of Art: Understanding Modern and Contemporary Art" is a series of sessions that combine theoretical knowledge with practical exercises and shared reflection. Each session consists of an accessible introduction to a selected phenomenon in 20th- and 21st-century art, followed by a workshop section—including discussions, analyses, individual and group tasks that allow participants to better understand the language of contemporary art and experience it in action.
During this session, we will examine the development of non-representational art after World War II. Abstract art then takes on various forms: it can be an expressive gesture of an artist abandoning traditional painting tools, a poetic narrative of emotions, a contemplation of pure existence, or an illusionistic trick that disrupts our certainty of vision. Each of these strategies was a reaction to the social changes of the time and can be seen as a narrative about the human condition in a changing world. Its development also illustrates the transformation of the experience of abstract art—this once hermetic and elitist genre is now conquering social media. Using examples of recent art utilizing the language of abstraction, we will also consider how it can speak to our present and whether abstraction can be politically engaged.
