"Time of Art: Understanding Modern and Contemporary Art" is a series of sessions that combine theoretical knowledge with practical exercises and shared reflection. Each session consists of an accessible introduction to a selected phenomenon in 20th- and 21st-century art, followed by a workshop section—including discussions, analyses, individual and group tasks—that allow participants to better understand the language of contemporary art and experience it in action.

The invention of photography in the 19th century transformed the understanding of what art is for and for whom. However, artists, although freed from the obligation to document reality, still wanted to speak about it—but on their own terms. This need was particularly strong after World War II, which affected many artists personally. The need to process one's own experiences and reflect on the human condition in the postmodern world resulted in the development of art from the realm of new figuration, which was also significantly influenced by pop art, a reaction to the commodification of social life and growing consumerism. The tradition of these trends is still alive in art, subject to the ruthless rules of the market and economics. During the workshop, we will discuss these issues using key examples of world art, but we will also examine the work of Polish artists inspired by Western art or observing the economic and social transformations in Poland after 1989.

Leader:
Karolina Plinta – art historian, critic, and editor-in-chief of "Szum" magazine, one of the most articulate commentators on the contemporary art scene in Poland. Thanks to her experience and open style, the workshops are a space not only for acquiring knowledge but also for active dialogue and creative experimentation.
